How to Make a Disaster Survival Kit

December 14, 2009 by admin

A disaster survival kit is an important preparation that every family should make together. In the event of a major natural disaster in your area, stores may not be open to provide the food and supplies your family will need to survive. That is why you must plan ahead and have a disaster kit ready in the case of an emergency.

These kits aren’t only beneficial during a natural disaster, they can also be especially beneficial this time of year if a major snowfall leaves you stranded at home for a few days. If you become unable to drive to the store, you’ll be very glad you planned ahead and have a pantry full of food and water.

What to put in your disaster kit:

Water - The average person needs approximately 2 litres of water per day. Store at least a 3 day supply of water in unbreakable, plastic containers.

Food – Any food that is compact and doesn’t spoil is ideal. Include canned foods like meats, baked beans, soups, pasta, fruits and vegetables. Dried or instant food. High energy foods like peanut butter, crackers, nuts, health food bars, protein bars, trail mix. Daily vitamins are also a good idea. Also include plastic cups, utensils, paper plates and don’t forget a can opener.

First Aid Kit – It is important to have two full first aid kits, one at home and another in your car.

Emergency Supplies – Emergency preparedness manual, battery-operated radio and/or television, signal flares, compass, pocket knife, duct tape, aluminum foil, needles and thread, plastic sheeting, extra batteries, lighter, matches, dust masks, paper towels, can opener and a wrench or pliers to turn off utilities.

Clothing and bedding – Sturdy shoes or boots, rain gear, blanket or sleeping bag for each person, gloves, thermals, sunglasses, a clean set of clothing.

Specialty Items – Toilet paper, soap, liquid detergent, personal sanitary items: toothpastes, toothbrush, deodorant, shampoo, lip balm, comb. Small shovel, plastic garbage bags, disinfectant cleaner, plastic bucket, flash light, water treatment tablets, sunscreen, money, emergency candles, whistle. Also include important medications and aspirin.

Entertainment - Books, deck of playing cards, board games, notepad, pencil or pen.

Meet at least once a year to discuss your emergency plans and to make sure the disaster supply kit’s emergency supplies are in working order. This will ensure that you and your family are prepared in the case of an emergency.

My wife actually bought me a survival kit for my birthday this year that has all this already in it. Hopefully I’ll never have to use it, but it’s better to be safe then sorry.
